Vendor Power!
A guide to street vending in New York
Street Vending is hard work. Aside from the long hours and thin margins, vendors have to contend with arcane and punitive laws and regulations that govern everything from umbrella dimensions to cart placement. Navigating these laws and administrative codes is difficult enough for native english speakers, let alone for new immigrants. Although they provide critical services to millions of New Yorkers, street vendors too often work in conditions that promote intimidation and fear.
Produced with designer Candy Chang and Sean Basinski of the Street Vendor Project, this poster/pamphlet uses friendly illustrations and diagrams to explain the legal framework of street vending in New York. The publication acts as both a communication tool for street vendors in their interactions with police and store-owners and also as a history of the changing legal fortune of street vending in the city.
